Events and Presentations

Center Directors, Dr. Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes and Dr. Michael Smyer, and Research Associate, Christina Matz-Costa will speak at the 7th International Conference on Occupational Stress and Health sponsored by NIOSH and APA, March 6-8, 2008.

Christina and Dr. Pitt-Catsouphes will be discussing a paper that they wrote on the relationship between flexibility, engagement and age as part of a symposium that reflects a unique collaboration of academic researchers and work-life practitioners. Dr. Pitt-Catsouphes and Christina will also be presenting a paper that explores the perceived meaning of workplace flexibility among human resource professionals and organizational factors associated with the availability of flexible work options for a multi-generational workforce as part of the symposium entitled, Workforce Diversities, Workplace Complexities: Promoting Positive Health & Business Outcomes.  Dr. Smyer will be the discussant.

Center Director, Dr. Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes, spoke at the Experience Wave NH conference on December 20th. She discussed how the NH state report can be utilized to make policy changes to turn the aging workforce crisis into an opportunity.

Carl T. Camden, President & Chief Executive Officer of Kelly Services, Inc. was the keynote speaker at the Business Roundtable Luncheon on Mature Workforce Issues in Boston on December 11th.

Center Directors, Michael A. Smyer and Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes along with Ce Shen and Matthew Flynn , presented Employers of Choice and Countries of Choice for a Global, Aging Workforce at GSA's 60th Annual Scientific Meeting—The Era of Global Aging: Challenges & Opportunities (November 17, 2007).

The Center on Aging and Work/Workplace Flexibility is pleased to announce the publication of a new Fact Sheet on Mental Health.

Joseph F. Quinn, Ph.D., Principal Investigator for the Center on Aging & Work, and Robert C. Clark, have written a chapter, “Effects of Pensions on Labor Markets and Retirement,” in The Evolving Pension System: Trends, Effects and Proposals for Reform, published by The Brookings Institution Press (2005).

The Work and Family Handbook, co-edited by Center Director Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes, Ph.D., published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc. Center researchers, including Jennifer Swanberg, Ph.D., Jacquelyn B. James, Ph.D., Natalia Sarkisian, Ph.D., and Brad Harrington, Ph.D., co-authored chapters in the book. (January 2006)

Appointments and Awards

The Center would like to congratulate CVS on receiving the American Society on Aging (ASA) 2007 Business and Aging Award for their commitment to older worker initiatives for the past fifteen years. SENIOR Advisor Stephen Wing accepted the award at the ASA national conference in Chicago. Click here for details. March 2007.

Center Director Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes,is one of the 2007 recipients of the Work-Life Legacy Award from the Families and Work Institute. Click here for details. June 11, 2007.

Dr. Michael Smyer, Director of the Center on Aging and Work/Workplace Flexibility and Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, has been named to the American Psychological Association's Committee on Aging (CONA). February 1, 2007.

Center Director Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes, Ph.D., will serve on the Advisory Council for the AARP project, Right Time-Right Workplace. This project will work with the National Retail Foundation to develop a new resource that will aid employers in recognizing the value of retaining and recruiting older workers and in implementing workplace flexibility strategies and practices to meet the needs of the aging workforce.

Principal Investigator John Williamson, Ph.D., was recently elected Chair of the Social Research, Policy and Planning (SSRP) section of the Gerontological Society of America. The SRPP’s purpose is to advance the social well-being of older people through scientific studies and the application of knowledge gained from them.

Center Director Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes, Ph.D., has been appointed to the Research Advisory Committee for WFD's Work/Life Database and Flexibility Inquiry Project. As one of her responsibilities, she will produce a special report on the experiences of older workers.


Center Investigator Natalia Sarkisian, Ph.D., and co-author Naomi Gerstel have been honored with the 2005 Rosabeth Moss Kanter International Award for Research Excellence in Families and Work.


Center Director Michael Smyer, Ph.D., has been appointed to a three-year term on the editorial board of Generations, the Journal of the American Society on Aging.

As tradesmen age, new workers in short supply Employment experts say an aging workforce of tradesman raises several challenges, as continuous training and knowledge transfer is crucial.
