Center Director, Mick Smyer, Ph.D., and Bruce Donatuti, a SENIOR advisor from Pitney Bowes Inc., presented a Keynote Address at the Eastern Ergonomics Conference in New York City. Their session was entitled "Flexible, Nimble, & Ahead of the Curve: How Pitney Bowes is Optimizing the Aging Workforce." (May 31, 2007)

Center Director Michael Smyer, Ph.D., presented a paper on Collaborative Work and the Potential Implications for Older Workers at an invitational conference on "The Future of Work for an Aging Population" in Miami, Florida. The conference was sponsored by The Center for Research and Education on Aging and Technology Enhancement (CREATE), the Center for Advanced Study on Aging (CASA) at the University of Miami, and the Office of Academic Affaris, American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). Director Dr. Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes recently did a presentation for the Gerontology Institute at U Mass. Boston. She discussed policies and practices that employers have adopted in response to the aging of the workforce. (February 26, 2007)

Director Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes, Ph.D., attended the annual meeting of the Alliance of Work-Life Professional in Phoenix, Arizona. She presented information about the Center’s recently completed National Study of Business Strategy and Workforce Development. This session was chaired by Kathy Lynch, Director of Employer Engagement at the Center. Dr. Pitt-Catsouphes was also the Issue Expert for Multi-Generational Issues at the meeting. Center Principal Investigators Jackie James, Ph.D., Tay McNamara, Ph.D., Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes, Ph.D., and Mick Smyer, Ph.D., hosted a briefing for members of the AARP National Policy Council and AARP staff. The Council members' discussion focused on the policy implications of the Center's research agenda for both employers and older workers. (September 18, 2006)

Center Director Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes, Ph. D., presented at two sessions during the Governor's Summit on Aging in Boise, Idaho. Dr. Pitt-Catsouphes discussed why and how to retain older workers and the state of play on phased retirement. Attracting experts and professionals from across the country, the conference addressed the dynamics of the aging population, including economic impact, workplace issues, and financial planning. Center Director Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes, Ph.D., was a speaker at the Business and Professional Women’s Foundation’s conference, “The State of Play on Phased Retirement: Facts, Figures, and Policies.” The audio conference, which took place on June 27, addressed issues surrounding phased retirement – who wants it, who offers it, and how the programs get set up.

Center Co-Directors Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes, Ph.D., and Michael A. Smyer, Ph.D., were speakers at “The Aging Workforce: Crisis or Opportunity” seminar, sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh’s Institute of Politics and the Three River Workforce Investment Board. Dr. Pitt-Catsouphes and Dr. Smyer placed aging workforce issues facing Pennsylvania in a national context, including demographic trends, the impact of an aging workforce on employers, and public policies for responding to the issue.
