According to a 2006 AARP report, 7.6% of the population 55 and older reporting that they wanted a job were "discouraged workers." (Discouraged workers "are men and women who say that they are available for work but are not seeking employment because they do not think work is available, think they lack the necessary schooling or training, fear that employers will think of them as being too old, or anticipate some other type of discrimination.")
