According to a 2007 study of health and productivity costs in 4 large companies, the most costly health problems in terms of medical and pharmaceutical costs are cancers [excluding skin cancer] and back/neck pain, each accounting for over $160,000 per 1000 employees. Coronary heart disease and other chronic pain were next, with approximately $115,000 per 1000 employees. (fig. 1, p.717)

This article documents results from four companies participating in the Health and Productivity as a Business Strategy study. These companies were identified based on size, availability of medical and pharmacy claims data, and availability of Health and Work Perforamce (HPQ) survey results. Data from over 57,000 employees was analyzed.
