According to a 2007 study of health and productivity costs in 4 large companies, the most costly medical conditions in terms of total health and productivity costs were back and neck pain, depression, fatigue, other chronic pain, and sleeping problems, each accounting for over $300,000 in total productivity costs per 1000 employees [total productivity costs include medical, pharmaceutical, absenteeism and presenteeism] . (fig. 2, p. 718)

This article documents results from four companies participating in the Health and Productivity as a Business Strategy study. These companies were identified based on size, availability of medical and pharmacy claims data, and availability of Health and Work Perforamce (HPQ) survey results. Data from over 57,000 employees was analyzed.
