The Global Initiatives at the Boston College Center on Aging & Work was established in 2008 in partnership with Middlesex University in London to focus on quality of employment cross nationally – an issue important to employers, employees, policy makers and researchers.
The Institute collaborates with academics and employers to examine the relationships between shifts in the age composition of the workforce, globalization, employer-sponsored policies and programs, public policies, and the employment experiences of the 21st century multi-generational workforce.
Savvy employers strive to become employers-of-choice to recruit, engage, and retain top talent in today’s 24/7 global information economy. However, there is limited information available to business leaders that can help them update their policies and practices to reflect the needs of the 21st century multi-generational workforce working in different countries.
The Global Initiatives addresses a range of critical contemporary issues:
-
How do employees of different ages/nationalities view their employment experiences?
- How do workplace-based resources and opportunities that support the quality employment compare across countries?
-
What national characteristics help explain variations in resources and supports between countries?
-
Are the preferences and priorities of different aged employees in selected countries similar or different?

|
The Global Initiatives’ evidence-based research helps organizations
- to become employers-of-choice for employees of all ages working in different countries, and
- to leverage today’s multi-generational workforce as a competitive advantage.
Starting in Summer 2008, the Global Initiatives will begin publishing several types of reports and papers, including:
Measures that Govern Rights to Alternative Work Arrangements
A table concerning statutory employee rights to adjust contractual working hours. Focusing mainly on EU and English-speaking countries, the table includes four basic categories:
- general statutory rights;
- rights linked to parenthood or family caregiving status;
- rights linked to gradual retirement;
- rights linked to leave for individual training and educational purposes.
These data have been made available by Dr. Janet Gornick, Director of the Luxembourg Income Study, a cross-national data archive located in Luxembourg. |
